COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Expo Gardens hosted an Independence Day block party on July 4th that featured local music and fun activities for community members. Organizers said the event celebrated American history and drew many Springfield residents.  25 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters rescued cats from an apartment fire on July 5th in Springfield after residents evacuated safely.  25 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Wakery, a late night coffee and non-alcoholic drink bar in Springfield, will close its doors on August 10—its owner said the business could not recover from the Adams Street fire and downtown challenges. The bar will stay open for the next month—hosting pop up events including Wakery Week of Magic from August 1 to 8 and completing any rentals booked until September 30.  WAND-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Springfield law enforcement responded to reports on the 1800 block of Camp Butler Road just after 7 p.m. when a resident discharged a shotgun in a wooded area—no injuries have been reported and no arrests have been made.  ABC 20

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Illinois’ fiscal year 2026 budget, effective July 1, cut over $14M in housing funding and removed $26.6M from the Home Illinois initiative amid a surge in homelessness; advocates warn that a 116% rise in the homeless population in 2024 + potential federal cuts may make reaching functional zero more difficult.  25 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Peoria City did not earn the win or tie they needed to clinch a playoff spot as Springfield FC scored a late 2-1 winner — the Carp still qualified for the USL League Two playoffs after Sunflower State lost to Des Moines. They will play their last regular season game next Saturday.  25 News
