- ➤ A Mega Millions ticket sold in Illinois won $3 million Tuesday night after matching five white balls with a 3X multiplier—The full jackpot rolled over and will be drawn Friday at 10 p.m. CT. The State Journal-Register
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Illinois family farmers are facing uncertainty over estate taxes as a bipartisan push to raise the exemption from $4 million to $6 million stalled in Springfield—forcing many heirs to consider selling land to cover tax bills. The Sangamon Reporter
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Illinois Springfield has been ranked as the top public regional university in Illinois for the seventh year by U.S. News and World Report — the ranking used graduation rates, faculty ratios and other measures. Chancellor Janet L. Gooch said the result shows that UIS helps prepare students for the workforce and that it placed among the top schools for veterans and social mobility in the Midwest. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Springfield leaders, including Mayor Misty Buscher, announced a new program on October 21 that will use an ambulance-style vehicle called the BOLT — designed to carry an EMT and a licensed social worker — to better address opioid and mental health emergencies. The city budgeted for the vehicle while more than $800,000 from a national settlement will fund new staffing opportunities and support the program’s ordinance now under review. - ➤ Springfield Fire Chief Nick Zummo said the city will use its new BEACON program to bring fire, police, and behavioral health teams together to handle drug and mental health calls, and a mobile BOLT unit will join the effort by next summer—funded by the national opioid settlement money. WAND-TV
- ➤ Residents needing a passport will have a chance to apply at the Rochester Public Library—located at 1 Community Drive—from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 25; applicants must bring a certified birth certificate, valid photo ID, and other required documents while regular fees will apply. - ➤ The Prairie Stars men's golf team finished second at the Bearcat Dual Gender at Far Oaks Golf Club in Caseyville by posting a 54-hole total of 893, a few strokes behind champion Quincy and ahead of Rockhurst. The team now turns its focus to the Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational this weekend in Owensboro—coach Josh Edison praised strong plays by freshman Vilgot Arleback as well as Jake Baldin and Sacha Lamraski amid tough wind conditions. - ➤ Glenwood beat Pleasant Plains in volleyball on October 22 — the Titans won the first set 31-29 and the second set 25-13 with Mya Marshall, Alexis Neumann, and Morgan Wiezorek leading. Glenwood will advance to the 3A Jerseyville regional next Tuesday while Pleasant Plains hosts Rochester for senior night on Thursday. WNNS
