COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Coppertop is a stray tabby that arrived on August 21 and is now ready for a new home — he is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and has tested negative for FIV and FeLV. He is available for adoption at Sangamon County Animal Control Adoption Center on Shale Street.  WYMG
  • Springfield's EAA Chapter 770 will host its third annual Wings and Wheels Fly-in & Car Show on Saturday, October 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport—this event supports an aviation scholarship program and will feature classic cars, a range of aircraft including helicopters, and food for $15.  The Sangamon Reporter
  • Kurt is a two-year-old Greyhound mix at Sangamon County Animal Control and Adoption Center since early September when he was brought in as a stray. He is friendly, walks well on a leash, and is available for foster care, foster adoption, or adoption (shelter hours are Monday-Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.).  Capitol City Now
  • Visit Springfield announced that the Gold Star Families Memorial Dedication for local veterans will take place at Oak Ridge Cemetery on October 18th at 10 a.m.—and on November 1st events honoring Abraham Lincoln will include graveside reflections at Oak Ridge Cemetery, a Mary Lincoln portrayal at 1 p.m., and a reenactment of the Lincolns’ wedding with live music at St. Paul’s Cathedral at 2 p.m.  WYMG

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Contractors struck a gas line Friday at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport — the Springfield Fire Department responded at 11:30 a.m. near the Standard Aero hangar and safely disabled the line with no injuries reported.  WMAY

  • Innovate Springfield will host UIS Founders Day on October 7 as the kickoff for 2025 Founders Week with local business founders—government leaders and community members gathering at the Horace Mann Building and Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in downtown Springfield. The free event will include guided tours, showcases, panels and networking with advance registration required.  University of Illinois Springfield

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Sept. 26, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield opened Lincoln: A Life and Legacy, a new exhibit that displays rare Lincoln artifacts and introduces a book telling his story through items like a shaving mirror — a link to his historic past.  The State Journal-Register

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Average gasoline prices in Illinois increased by 1.8 cents per gallon to $3.36 based on a GasBuddy survey of 4,378 stations—prices remain 16.9 cents lower than last month and 11.2 cents lower than the same time last year while diesel dropped to $3.652 per gallon.  ABC 20

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A University of Illinois study shows that Illinois’ wetlands shrank from 8 million acres in the 1980s to under one million acres today with only 275,000 acres federally protected under the Clean Water Act—threatened further by a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling.  WYMG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Springfield Flagship Center launched two 24/7 drive-through DMV kiosks at 2701 S. Dirksen Parkway that let drivers renew vehicle registrations, print license plate stickers, or renew driver's licenses with a temporary document provided — drivers follow signs from the main entrance to access the kiosks. New applicants still must visit in person to complete their services and receive mailed documents later.  Capitol City Now
