CULTURE NEWS

  • Over 1 million visitors attended two Illinois state fairs this year—723,079 in Springfield and 282,202 in Du Quoin, with Springfield's attendance marking the second highest ever. Officials said the record grandstand sales, camping permits and carnival rides set the stage for next year's events in August and September.  WYMG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, UIS was named the top public regional university in Illinois by U.S. News & World Report for the seventh straight year and ranked 10th among public regional universities in the Midwest—ranking factors included graduation, retention, and peer assessments.  WYMG
  • Jerry Kruse, dean and provost of SIU School of Medicine, announced he will step down when his contract ends on August 31, 2026. He joined the school in 1984 and led programs in medical education and rural training—now the university will launch a national search for his successor.  The Sangamon Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sangamon County Clerk Don Gray announced he is seeking re-election and has enhanced online features and mobile office hours to make record requests easier for Springfield residents—ensuring a smooth transition as his office takes on added responsibilities.  WYMG
  • Mayor Misty Buscher is holding the first Springfield Community Connection on September 29 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.—the meeting at Papo’s Café at 3290 W Illes Ave will include Alderman Ralph Hanauer and senior staff who will give residents materials to stay informed.  WMAY
  • The Springfield-Sangamon County Regional Planning Commission is asking residents, students, business owners and visitors to fill out an online survey to help shape future transportation, land-use and development plans. The feedback will be used to guide improvements in quality of life and economic growth across Sangamon County—this survey is a key part of the Our Region Our Vision Future Growth Plan.  The Sangamon Reporter

HEALTH NEWS

  • An Illinois resident became seriously ill with Powassan virus after a suspected tick bite, and health officials confirmed it as the state’s first case. Authorities advised residents to check for ticks and wear protective clothing as warm weather continues—reminding everyone to seek care if symptoms emerge.  The State Journal-Register

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Illinois home prices rose in August while home sales and available inventory fell compared to last year, according to Illinois REALTORS data—statewide, the median price reached $315,000, up 6.8%, and Chicago saw a 5.6% increase. Analysts forecast a nearly 5% drop in home sales from September to November as tight inventory continues to shape the market.  WYMG

SPORTS NEWS

  • During the Springfield High vs Southeast football game, eight players were ejected in the fourth quarter after an on-field altercation. District 186 rules required the players to sit out one game — and the IHSA will review the footage for further consequences.  WMAY
