BUSINESS NEWS

  • A demolition team is set to begin taking down the old Pillsbury plant as a wrecking ball is assembled on Monday and the 160-foot smokestack will come down on Tuesday or Wednesday—workers will then demolish the five-story grocery mix building while a shaded viewing area is set up for local residents who must stay clear of the main gate at 16th Street.  WYMG

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum completed a six-year project to restore 271 fragile charters from the Grand Army of the Republic. The collection—spanning documents from several Illinois counties—is now available for onsite study and will be digitized for wider access.  The Sangamon Reporter

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Illinois State Board of Education is asking parents, teachers, and community advocates to submit ideas for the 2027 school budget by providing input online or testifying at public hearings. The comments will guide the state’s budget recommendation for the next school year - with hearings on Sept. 30 at the Board Room and Oct. 16 and Oct. 21 held online.  The State Journal-Register

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Due to very dry conditions, several Central Illinois communities have issued burn bans to reduce wildfire risk—Athens and Coles County have restricted open burning while allowing only small, attended campfires. Residents are urged to follow local guidelines and avoid any unauthorized outdoor fires.  WYMG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Illinois has not fixed its tax sale rules—rules that let private buyers take homes if taxes are unpaid—even though a Supreme Court decision said the practice is unfair. Lawmakers in Springfield and county officials face growing lawsuits as plans for change remain deadlocked and the fall tax sale has been delayed until March.  WYMG
  • Mayor Misty Buscher criticized city chief information officer Jayme Sullivan for celebrating conservative talker Charlie Kirk’s death on social media last week—officials have not said if any action will follow.  WYMG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, the Springfield Fire Department is installing new FDA-approved Stryker Life Pak 35 cardiac monitor defibrillators in every frontline vehicle to quickly check vital signs — like blood pressure and carbon monoxide levels— in order to improve emergency responses. Deputy Division Chief Bryce McCormick said the move, made during Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month, will help save lives.  ABC 20

SPORTS NEWS

  • Illinois Springfield women's soccer team will begin GLVC play on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Kiwanis Stadium when they host William Jewell; the match will also serve as Senior Day for nine Prairie Stars who will be honored around 2 p.m.—the team earned its first win this season with a 2-0 victory over Ohio Dominican.  University of Illinois Springfield
  • UIS volleyball extended its win streak to five matches with two wins at the Hall of Fame City Challenge—sweeping Slippery Rock and beating Bluefield State to move to a 6-1 record while head coach Laura Ulrich praised senior setter Erica Sledge for surpassing 2,000 assists; the team will host Maryville in its homecoming match at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.  University of Illinois Springfield
