COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Moving Pillsbury Forward will begin demolition this month at the 18-acre Pillsbury Mills site to remove 160 silos and 500,000 square feet of buildings after safely clearing asbestos—neighbors are kept safe by close monitoring of air quality.  WYMG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Operators of the Viper Mine near Williamsville confirmed its permanent closure, ending over 40 years of coal supply to City Water, Light and Power; the facility had been the main source until the city accepted a lower bid from another mine in November 2024—underground portals are sealed and reclamation work has begun.  WMAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UIS Chancellor Janet Gooch will serve a four-year term on the NCAA Committee on Access, Opportunity and Impact. The committee was formed by combining four groups to boost equitable opportunities for student-athletes—her role will shape policies that affect college sports.  WYMG

HEALTH NEWS

  • On September 5th, 2025, the 25 News morning team joined a local fundraiser for Alzheimer's Disease to help support research and raise awareness in our community — the event brought neighbors together for a good cause.  25 News
  • Planned Parenthood of Illinois will offer free monthly walk-in STI testing clinics at all 13 health centers starting Sept. 10, with clinics held on the second Wednesday of each month. Patients can receive various tests and quick consultations—walk-in appointments end 45 minutes before closing and results are kept confidential.  The State Journal-Register

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UIS men’s cross country team opened its season yesterday at the 10th Annual Prairie Stars Invitational on Sept. 5 at 6:15 p.m. at the UIS Cross Country Course near University Drive. Teams from the Great Lakes Valley Conference and other Central Illinois schools raced, and the meet also hosted the first UIS Cross Country and Track Alumni Weekend.  University of Illinois Springfield
