COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Girl Scouts of Central Illinois will host their eighth annual Cookies and Cocktails event on September 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Erin’s Pavilion in Springfield. Local chefs will compete to make desserts with Girl Scout Cookies as guests sample treats, vote for favorites, and enjoy appetizers, a cash bar, and raffle prizes (tickets cost $100 each or $850 per table) to benefit Girl Scout programs.  ABC 20
  • The Illinois Secretary of State Vehicle Show returns to downtown Springfield on Sept.6 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.—celebrating 75 years of classic cars and community and featuring the Chrysler 300's 70th anniversary along with awards for outstanding vehicles.  The State Journal-Register

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sangamon County Historical Society and Oak Ridge Cemetery will host a free walk on October 5 from noon to 3:30 p.m. that features Rev. Frederick Strechfuss, portrayed by Andy VanDeVoort, who taught at Concordia Theological Seminary for 32 years — donations and refreshments will be available.  WYMG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Illinois State Board of Elections said it will not share its full voter registration database with the DOJ because state law protects voters' sensitive personal information—officials argue that handing over unredacted data would expose residents to risks such as hacking.  WYMG
  • State Senator Sally Turner filed a bill to create a utility rebate program for households with incomes from 100 to 500 percent of federal poverty guidelines—using the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to administer the program. Turner said the program would help families who earn too much to get traditional assistance.  WMAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • An 8-month-old child died after a medical emergency in a home in the 3300 block of Normandy Road on Thursday — emergency responders arrived at 12:53 p.m. and provided immediate aid, but the child could not be saved while authorities noted no sign of foul play.  ABC 20

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UIS volleyball team will host the Illinois National Guard UIS Invitational at TRAC today and Saturday to launch its season under new head coach Laura Ulrich with returning stars including Makenna Cox and Erica Sledge after an 18-10 record. It opens play today at 9:30 a.m. against Central Missouri, which it seeks to avenge from a 2014 sweep — then faces Lake Superior State at 7:30 p.m., Kentucky Wesleyan at 9:30 a.m. and Roosevelt at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday — as fans get their first look at the team.  University of Illinois Springfield
