CRIME NEWS

  • Springfield Police investigated theft and property damage at Lake Springfield Marina on Aug. 9 and 10 and ask residents to help identify a white SUV and two suspects—one in a red shirt with dark pants and one in a white shirt with light pants—seen near the rental boats when gas tanks were stolen.  WYMG
  • Authorities arrested Gabriel Calixto in Mexico for his alleged role in fatally stabbing local activist Emma Shafer on July 23, 2023, near 8th and Clay Streets — officials are coordinating with federal agencies to extradite him to Springfield.  WYMG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Springfield added 1,900 nonfarm jobs since July as the economy shows strength with a 4.2% unemployment rate and growing industries like healthcare + education and construction. The housing market remains stable with multiple offers on homes under $400,000 and new subdivisions planned to meet demand without risking overbuilding.  ABC 20

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Springfield Park District voted Wednesday night to transfer the 100-year-old Robin Roberts Stadium to the City via an intergovernmental agreement—and the city council will decide next week whether to start a bidding process that may let the Lucky Horseshoes take over the facility. Officials said the change will allow them to reassign resources to improve other local recreational facilities.  ABC 20
  • The Springfield Park District approved an intergovernmental agreement that will return Robin Roberts Stadium to city control after 23 years — letting the Lucky Horseshoes-backed Friends of Robin Roberts Stadium plan improvements such as storm drainage and artificial turf. The city council will add the agreement to its consent agenda next Tuesday and, if approved, the transfer will free up six figures to support more than 40 local baseball diamonds.  WYMG

  • The UIS women's cross country team has been ranked 3rd in the GLVC preseason poll for fall 2025 and will start its season on Sept. 5 at the 10th Annual Prairie Star Invitational—facing several conference opponents—while coach Emmons King and top runners Maddie Miller-Ross and Kaliegh Inniss hope to improve on last year's fourth-place finish at the GLVC Championships.  University of Illinois Springfield
  • Football excitement grows as Southeast hosts East Peoria today at 7 p.m. on the newly renovated Spartan Field, which received $13.3 million in upgrades, and Rochester will reveal its updated Rocket Booster Stadium on Saturday with a new turf field, extra bleacher seating and upgraded lighting — a change expected to boost fan engagement.  The State Journal-Register
