CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Sangamon County jury on Thursday found a Springfield man guilty of first-degree murder for the April 2021 shooting death of a woman and of aggravated battery with a firearm for fatally shooting 37-year-old Courtney Smith at a Lincoln Avenue residence—his sentencing will be held on November 18. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Springfield had 21 consecutive months of job gains as total non-farm jobs increased to 111,600 in July and the local unemployment rate dropped from last year. Growth was seen in sectors like Information, Retail, Health Services, Transportation and Wholesale Trade while declines were reported in Professional-Business Services, Government and others (data from the Illinois Department of Employment Security). - ➤ Data from Zumper show that apartment listing prices in Springfield increased by 5% since last July, with the typical rent now at $1,050 from last year's $996, while one-bedroom apartments have stayed at $800 and two-bedroom listings rose 8% from $950. Local apartments are 48% below the state median and 46% below the national median, as statewide rents climbed to $2,037. The State Journal-Register
