Good morning, Springfield. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 18th of August.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ RISE Springfield will host its annual Give & Take Professional Clothing Drive at the Salvation Army Community Center on August 22—donation day from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.—and on August 23 when attendees can pick up professional clothing from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event accepts gently used professional attire to support those preparing for job interviews or workplace changes while any remaining items will be donated to local nonprofits. FINANCE NEWS
- ➤ Illinois does not tax monthly Social Security payments or most retirement income such as 401(k) plans and pensions, taxing only income earned from work. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Federal officials sent a letter to Illinois election officials on August 14 asking for a full voter registration file with complete details—such as driver’s license numbers and Social Security digits—by August 21. - ➤ Illinois residents with celiac disease now dine out with greater safety after Senate Bill 1288 required all food handlers to complete training on gluten-free and sesame safety—championed by Senator Sally Turner. Signed on August 1, the law ensures proper cleaning and labeling to help reduce cross-contamination risks. The Sangamon Reporter
- ➤ Illinois law will let first-time weapon offenders apply for FOID cards while in a pretrial detention diversion program — a change that takes effect on January 1 and helps them resume legal gun ownership sooner, though state police may still deny the application if a person is ineligible.
