  • The 2025 Golden Abe’s Fantastic Fair Food People’s Choice Award is open for votes until Thursday, August 14th at Noon—fairgoers at the Illinois State Fair can sample treats like deep-fried delights, sweet confections, and savory surprises and cast their vote for the top dish. This contest invites food lovers to help choose the fair’s favorite flavor.  WMAY
  • Local police and twenty Texas Roadhouse restaurants will host the Tip-A-Cop fundraiser on Monday, August 25 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. + organizers aim to raise funds for Special Olympics Illinois in Springfield and other areas. Since 2015, the event has raised over $681,000+ to support athletes with intellectual disabilities.  ABC 20

  • Authorities released photos in the hunt for a suspected gunman — who allegedly shot a police officer and a deputy in Central Illinois.  25 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Megan Moroney broke the attendance record at the Illinois State Fair on Sunday night by drawing a crowd of 15,532 fans—surpassing past records set by Lil Wayne and Jason Aldean.  FOX Illinois
  • The UIS Visual Arts Gallery will present the exhibition L’Éphémère by celebrated Illinois artist Rosalyn Schwartz, which opens Aug. 25 and runs until Oct. 2. A public reception on Sept. 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.—free to all—will be held at the gallery, and a conversation with the artist is set for Sept. 19 at 3 p.m.  University of Illinois Springfield
  • The Illinois State Fair announced the 2025 Twilight Parade winners, with Mighty Marching Machine from Richton Park winning the Marching Band Contest; Cool Cruisers Car Club from Edinburg, Springfield Youth Hockey League, B’s Creative Studio, and HOPE also earned top honors in Specialty Units, Non-Commercial Floats, Commercial Floats, and the Governor’s Sweepstakes Award—showing talent from across the state.  ABC 20

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Veterans were honored last Sunday at the Illinois State Fair — a day set aside for their tribute — as a band played and Assistant Adjutant General Daniel McDonough recognized their service. The Illinois Department of Agriculture announced its 'Homegrown by Heroes' program — intended to help veterans transition to civilian life — and the Department of Veterans Affairs detailed that over $500 million has been spent on veterans’ homes while a new facility in Quincy will open this fall.  WYMG
  • Members of the Sonya Massey Commission met in Springfield Monday and were joined by former Ferguson Commission members to share lessons learned from over a decade of community work — they will meet again in September to continue the discussion.  WAND-TV
