COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Illinois State Fair will start in three days as vendors like Peggy Colp, who runs Dusty Gyro’s and a Philly cheese steak stand, and Frian Sugiharto—owner of Indolishus—prepare to serve fair food and share culture with families. The fair will also feature a new security system with walk-through screening while crews work to fix a water main break.  ABC 20
  • American Business Club of Springfield will serve as grand marshal for Thursday’s Illinois State Fair Twilight Parade, adding to its long role at the fair since 1954. Club president Jerry Boster said the club’s Amtryke program donated $586,000 between 2023 and 2024 to help mobility-impaired children and veterans—supporting local charities, non-profits, and scholarships.  WYMG

  • The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office and the Jury Commission warned residents about a phone scam in which callers falsely claim to be law enforcement officers or court personnel to secure payments via gift cards, cash, or bank transfers—officials stressed that no agency ever asks for money over the phone.  The Sangamon Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Community relations director Ethan Posey said cannabis tax revenue will help Springfield's east side by guiding the minority business institute to address gaps for applicants who missed out. City council will vote Wednesday on grants offering $165,073 to homeowners and $406,000 to local businesses — a measure designed to boost local development.  WYMG
  • The Illinois Department of Transportation and Agriculture said that starting at 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, traffic around the Illinois State Fairgrounds will follow a new counterclockwise one-way route and close the lane from Veterans Parkway to Eighth Street — changes that include a detour for parade traffic — with normal flow resuming by 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18. The Twilight Parade will close key streets beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday, and parking on neighborhood roads south of Sangamon Avenue will be prohibited until traffic returns to normal.  WYMG
  • Gov. JB Pritzker signed a law on Friday that requires the State Fire Marshal to track firefighter death causes—covering injuries and long-term illnesses. It will take effect January 1 and aims to give lawmakers data to improve safety.  WAND-TV
  • Springfield city council will vote Wednesday on cannabis tax revenue grants—$165,073 for homeowners and $406,000 for businesses—in an effort to boost support on the east side. Community relations director Ethan Posey said the Office of Planning and Economic Development and the Office of Community Relations will meet with unsuccessful applicants to tailor a minority business institute curriculum based on their feedback.  Capitol City Now
