COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The iconic Budweiser Clydesdales will visit Springfield as part of a nationwide tour celebrating 15 years of Folds of Honor—a nonprofit that supports educational scholarships for families of fallen or disabled service members and first responders. They will appear at events at the Illinois State Fair with parades on August 7, 10, 15, and 16 and stops at local spots including Schnucks on August 8, Dockers on August 13, and Riverton Party Store on August 14, and will be on display daily until 9 p.m.  ABC 20

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Four people suffered smoke inhalation yesterday in a West Bluff house fire—firefighters responded quickly and treated the victims.  25 News
  • A car crashed into the Star 66 Cafe on East Camp Butler Road Sunday morning, injuring a woman and her two grandkids while an older male driver—a local regular—expressed regret as cleanup began and the cafe reopened within hours.  ABC 20

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Illinois dropped 4.8 cents a gallon to an average of $3.35 a gallon—down 12.8 cents from last month and 68.2 cents lower than a year ago.  WMAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski hosted a roundtable discussion today to address challenges facing the U.S. Postal Service in Central & Southern Illinois. Local union leaders & postal workers met with community stakeholders to discuss how to improve mail delivery, protect union jobs, and oppose privatization while Budzinski vowed to uphold the service as a public good.  ABC 20
  • Illinois State Fire Marshal Michele Pankow reminded Springfield residents to inspect and clean grills for leaks and grease buildup to help prevent fires during summer grilling + she advises using propane and charcoal grills only outdoors and keeping pets and children three feet away + residents should have a fire extinguisher nearby for emergencies.  WCIA
  • Several Springfield-area GOP lawmakers, including Representatives Deering, Coffey, and Senator McClure, have joined a challenge urging Gov. Pritzker to veto a civil procedure bill that would allow out-of-state lawsuits against Illinois businesses. Critics argue the measure violates the constitution and could overload local courts — a Sangamon County case is set to be reviewed on Aug. 13, and a decision from the governor is expected by the end of August.  WYMG
  • Chatham Police Sergeant Travis Schaal and Sergeant Jacob Bouldin were honored by the ILACP with the Life Saving Award on July 22, 2024—Schaal saved lives by performing CPR and calmly assisting a woman in crisis while Bouldin controlled severe bleeding with a tourniquet—showing their strong commitment to public safety.  ABC 20
