ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Springfield Fire Department investigated a house fire that occurred Friday morning in a two-level home on South Lincoln Avenue + Ivywood Drive where heavy smoke from the front door and basement flames were quickly contained with no injuries and no damage to nearby structures.  WCIA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Active Creative Teen Theatre is presenting Hadestown Teen Edition by Anaïs Mitchell at the Hoogland Center for the Arts from July 18th to 20th and again from July 25th to 27th, with shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.—the production is directed by Kierie Pickett and Julia Rolens.  ABC 20

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Illinois residents may see the Perseid meteor shower from mid-July through late August; experts say the best time to watch it—between midnight and dawn—is on clear nights. The shower will peak overnight between Aug. 12 and 13.  The State Journal-Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor JB Pritzker asked state lawmakers for more authority to regulate the homeowners insurance market after State Farm Fire and Casualty Company notified the Illinois Department of Insurance of a 27.2% increase in premiums. The veto session is scheduled to begin Oct. 14—lawmakers will consider his request then.  WMAY
  • Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza made an early state pension payment for the second time on July 18 because extra state funds were available — she also talked about her political future on WTAX Morning Newswatch.  Capitol City Now
  • Sangamon County Jail lost water and power after contractors working on the Springfield Rail Improvements Project and the new transportation HUB struck a water pipe on Monday and an underground power line on Wednesday. Sheriff Paula Crouch said officials provided bottled water to inmates and used backup generators until power was restored.  WMAY

SPORTS NEWS

  • On July 18, the IHSA released the 2025 high school football schedules for Springfield area teams — the release shows week-by-week game matchups for local conferences. Local teams will begin practice on August 11, play their first games on August 29 — and state playoffs will start on October 31 with championships on Thanksgiving weekend at Hancock Stadium.  The State Journal-Register
