BUSINESS NEWS

  • Several small downtown restaurants, including the Wakery, closed in recent months because poor traffic from unclear parking and low lighting has hurt customer visits. City leaders and Downtown Springfield Inc. are working through funding and state programs to support businesses—though some owners say promises have so far been empty.  WYMG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Several downtown small businesses—including Jerk Shop Go, Tacology 201, Loukinens’ on 4th, MaryFlor Mexican Restaurant, and the Wakery—closed in recent months due to poor foot traffic and safety issues, with owner Elizabeth Wake citing empty promises from city officials. Mayor Buscher and Downtown Springfield Inc.—offering funding and assistance programs—are working to support remaining owners as more closures are expected by year’s end.  WYMG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Sangamon County Coroner's Office received national accreditation from the International Association of Coroners & Medical Examiners for meeting 285 standards and 100% of mandatory requirements. Jim Allmon said the achievement shows the office's professionalism and transparency after a long process.  ABC 20
  • The City of Springfield is considering changes to licensing rules for some second-hand dealerships after a rash of copper thefts in Sangamon County prompted city council debate on the issue. Licensed pawn brokers remain unaffected—dealers falling outside the legal definition of pawnshops may soon face new requirements as the council studies possible impacts on businesses.  WMAY

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Data from Realtor.com shows that in April, homes in Sangamon County sold at a median price of $186,000—up 9.4% from March—with single-family homes increasing to $187,500 and condo and townhome prices jumping to $153,500, while overall recorded sales fell 32.4% from April last year. Two single-family homes sold for over $1 million in April—compared to none in April last year—which offers a snapshot of a shifting local market.  The State Journal-Register

SPORTS NEWS

  • UIS announced that Will Oberg will return as the full-time assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator for the Prairie Stars for the 2025-26 season and will lead the team’s offensive development. Oberg joined the coaching staff last season and also managed the Rockford Rivets where he set a franchise record in wins.  WYMG
  • The UIS volleyball team, led by fifth-year head coach Kamille Jones, announced a 2025 schedule featuring 14 home matches at TRAC — including seven conference games in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The season opens with a scrimmage at Bradley on August 23 and continues with tournaments and away games until NCAA regional play begins on December 4.  University of Illinois Springfield
