Good morning, Springfield. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 23rd of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital is hosting its annual Touch a Truck Back-to-School Supply Drive on July 17 in front of the hospital. Community residents may donate school supplies until July 14 at drop-off sites (the hospital lobby, SIU Women and Children’s Clinic, and America Ambulance) while pediatric patients get a private view of emergency vehicles and visits from local police and firefighters.  The Sangamon Reporter

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Board member Micah Miller proposed that District 186 review its cell phone rules for fairness after a student survey and inconsistent enforcement, while board member Debi Iams explained that the policy is only a year old plus funds for Yondr pouches are not available.  WYMG
  • Seventeen local high school students from several area schools participated in HSHS St. John's Hospital's first High School Healthcare Bootcamp where they shadowed departments such as the NICU, Emergency Department, and Cardiac Catheterization Lab. The free program was funded by HSHS St. John's Foundation and additional bootcamps will be offered in the fall and winter + more opportunities are expected to follow.  WYMG
  • School advocates warn that federal cuts to Medicaid and SNAP food assistance could reduce funds for meals and health services at Illinois schools — risking higher absenteeism and lower reimbursement for important programs. Lawmakers may need to revise a state trigger law if these cuts take effect — which would add extra strain on school budgets.  WMAY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Advocates, including senior attorney Brian Lynk, warn that the EPA proposal to roll back rules on power plant pollution may lead to more harmful emissions and fewer public health benefits. The public can submit comments within 45 days and join a virtual hearing on July 8—environmental groups have even asked for an extended comment period.  WMAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Water, Light and Power was approved by Springfield City Council to sign a 25-year contract with Sangamon Solar LLC to buy 25 MW from a planned 100 MW solar installation in Sangamon County — the deal will power about 5,900 homes and kick off Phase 1 of the Sunshine Savings program for low-income residents, with construction set to start in 2026 and operations beginning in 2028.  WYMG
  • Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul joined 22 other state attorneys general in filing an amicus brief to support lawsuits by NPR and PBS that aimed to block an executive order cutting federal funding for public broadcasters. The brief argued that the proposed cuts hurt local emergency alerts, education and news coverage in Springfield + other regions, while a new federal budget plan in the House may undercut these legal efforts.  WMAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office warns pet owners that heat can rapidly harm animals and advises providing plenty of water, shade, and rest during hot days — never leaving pets locked in a car. The office also recommends limiting exercise and watching humidity and hot pavement to keep pets safe.  WCIA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Memorial Health Championship returns to Panther Creek Country Club to mark its 10th anniversary as a Korn Ferry Tour event — the tournament will run from Thursday, June 26 through Sunday, June 29 and offers free general admission and parking with shuttle service from Landmark Ford.  The State Journal-Register

Beyond just saving space, compression packing cubes keep your luggage neat and organized. No more rummaging through your suitcase — everything stays in its place, easily accessible when you need it.

Lightweight and durable, these cubes are ideal for carry-ons and checked bags alike. They also help prevent overpacking by limiting how much you can fit in each cube. Once you try them, you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them.
