COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Former alderwoman and current state senator Doris Turner said she worries that downtown Springfield has lost its busy charm and family-friendly atmosphere. She is working with Downtown Springfield, Inc.—exploring ideas for renovations and boosting local patronage—to help revive the area.  Capitol City Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Speaker Michael Madigan was sentenced to 7 ½ years in federal prison by U.S. District Judge John Blakey—he will report to prison on Oct. 13 and must serve three years probation and pay a $2.5 million fine following a split verdict on bribery and corruption charges.  WMAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers approved a $15.7M increase for AG Raoul’s operating expenses; his office will receive $85.7M in General Revenue Fund support for the fiscal year ending June 30 to help hire more staff and handle rising litigation matters. Including other funds, the total budget remains almost unchanged at about $194.465M — a slight increase over last year.  Capitol City Now

  • UIS men's basketball program announced the hiring of Zack Jadzak as an assistant coach for the 2025-26 season. He brings experience from Illinois College’s 17-9 season and previous roles at Buena Vista University and North Central College—experience he will use to mentor student-athletes.  University of Illinois Springfield
  • Glenwood softball won the 3A state championship after beating Providence Catholic 3-2 in eight innings on Saturday. The Titans finished 37-1 and earned their first title since 2014 when Irie Lohrenz hit a key RBI single in the eighth inning.  WNNS
  • After the Titans secured a 3-2 win in the 3A state championship, players Vondel Edgar, Irie Lohrenz, Ava Bobb, and Sophia Feld shared their thoughts on the victory. They highlighted key plays and teamwork—promising more strong performances as the season continues.  WNNS
