Good morning, Springfield. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 8th of June.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill aimed at boosting small poultry farms is headed to the governor after the House and Senate approved it unanimously; if signed, the law will let farmers processing fewer than 7,500 birds bypass state and federal inspections and sell their products at markets and roadside stands—while requiring sealed, leak-proof packaging and temperature controls. Local lawmakers and farmers say the change will cut travel to USDA-approved facilities and support small farm production.  WMAY
  • Illinois lawmakers approved a $55.2B budget on May 31 that adds $1B in new revenue and boosts spending by over $2B for FY26, but Civic Federation President Joe Ferguson said the plan is incomplete—relying on fund sweeps and short-term fixes that could make future planning harder.  WMAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Federal health officials said Saturday that a salmonella outbreak linked to a recall of about 1.7 million eggs by August Egg Company sickened at least 79 people and hospitalized 21 across seven states. The recall affects eggs sold in Illinois among other states—consumers are urged to discard any recalled eggs and carefully clean surfaces that contacted them.  FOX Illinois

Maximize Space and Stay Organized with Compression Packing Cubes

Don’t overlook compression packing cubes for your next trip — they’re a simple but transformative travel essential. Designed to compress clothing and maximize space, these cubes help you fit twice as much into your suitcase without the bulk.

Beyond just saving space, compression packing cubes keep your luggage neat and organized. Group your outfits by day or category, separate clean and dirty clothes, or designate cubes for different family members when traveling together. No more rummaging through your suitcase — everything stays in its place, easily accessible when you need it.

Lightweight and durable, these cubes are ideal for carry-ons and checked bags alike. They also help prevent overpacking by limiting how much you can fit in each cube. Once you try them, you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them.
