  • On May 2, the city celebrated Lake Springfield’s 90th birthday when water poured over the dam to mark full capacity after an 18-month fill delay caused by challenges like the Dust Bowl. City officials are remodeling the lake’s Beach House for events while plans for a backup water supply lake remain on hold—Army Corps requirements for stream mitigation must be met.  WYMG

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An 8-year-old boy and four others died in a car crash at a Chatham daycare on April 28 when a Jeep driven by Marianne Akers struck the building and children playing inside—investigators said the crash remains under review with no charges filed.  Capitol News Illinois

  • Stacker ranked the 50 highest-paying jobs in Springfield for high school graduates using Bureau of Labor Statistics data from May 2024—listing roles from landscaping supervisors to police and detective supervisors that pay from about $50,920 to $108,270. The report details median wages and employment numbers—offering local job seekers key comparisons for career choices.  Capitol City Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Springfield City Council approved $1.1 million in American Rescue Plan funds to Helping Hands to support services for the unhoused. A proposal by Ward Two Alderman Shawn Gregory to cut about $350,000 failed on a 3—6 vote—officials say the grant will expand the organization’s capacity.  WYMG
  • Governor Pritzker has a bill on his desk that would ban the sale, marketing and distribution of at-home sexual assault evidence collection kits—Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul warned these kits might not be used in court and could stop survivors from getting proper medical help. If signed, the law will go into effect Jan. 1—allowing buyers to sue sellers for damages.  WCIA
  • Illinois lawmakers approved a bill that lets nonprofits build tiny homes for veterans without following costly electric vehicle charging rules & sent the proposal to Gov. JB Pritzker's desk, dedicating the measure to late Central Illinois Veterans Commission member Joe Schaler.  WAND-TV
  • Illinois is set to address maternal healthcare deserts with a bill that empowers certified nurse midwives to provide home and out-of-hospital births if they secure collaborative agreements with local doctors—an effort aimed at expanding care in shortage areas. The legislation passed unanimously in the House and 57-1 in the Senate—now it heads to Gov. JB Pritzker for review.  WAND-TV

  • Springfield High girls soccer team advanced to state for the first time after defeating Triad 4 to 2 in penalty kicks following a 2 to 1 win Tuesday evening—with Kamryn Hoffman scoring the equalizer and Lydia Auble making a key save. They will play Peoria Notre Dame in the 2A semifinals on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Naperville.  WNNS
