CRIME NEWS

  • After being found guilty on 10 corruption charges, former House Speaker Michael Madigan faces a recommendation for a 12 ½-year prison sentence and a $1.5 million fine—he asks for five years' probation with one year of home detention ahead of his June 13 sentencing.  WYMG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Stacker ranked 50 high-paying jobs in Springfield using pay data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics from May 2024—top earners include surgeons, physicians and psychiatrists who earn at least $239,200 a year. The ranking leaves out jobs without pay numbers and shows how local pay compares across the market.  Capitol City Now

  • Visit Springfield is accepting applications for local tourism grants worth $35,000 for use in later parts of 2025 and throughout 2026—applications must be submitted by 3:00 p.m. on July 15.  WYMG

SPORTS NEWS

  • UIS Athletics named Emmons King the official head coach of the Prairie Stars cross country and track & field program, ending his interim role held since fall 2022—King, a UIS alumnus who joined as an assistant in 2021, led the team to top finishes and will now guide the program into its tenth season with assistant coaches Tyler Pence and Kaitlin Skeates.  University of Illinois Springfield
  • Sacred Heart Griffin scored four runs in the fourth inning to lead the Cyclones to a 4-1 win over Pleasant Plains as Andy Antonacci pitched 6 1/3 innings and Drew Ward earned the save using a strong effort by the team. The Cyclones will play Monticello Monday night at 7 p.m. at Lincoln Land in the 2A supersectional.  WNNS
  • Glenwood baseball won the 3A Jacksonville Regional Title over the host Crimsons 4—0 on Saturday; players Tyler Gurski, Cam Appenzeller and coach Casey Erickson discussed the win after the game.  WNNS
