COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A fully restored 1929 Ford Tri-Motor aircraft will offer historic flights at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport today through Sunday while the Experimental Aircraft Association hosts rides and pilots answer questions about the plane's storied past — known as the Tin Goose — with refreshments available.  WAND-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Illinois State Library dedicated a reading room in honor of former Governor Jim Edgar on Wednesday afternoon. Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias along with local officials noted that Edgar—who oversaw the library building's 1990 construction—helped shape the state's library and literacy programs.  WMAY
  • Yesterday, Governor JB Pritzker visited Kumler Outreach Ministries Food Pantry in Springfield to discuss proposed federal cuts to SNAP—which could impact 427,000 residents and risk food insecurity—and to stress the importance of strong local food programs.  WMAY
  • On Thursday evening, the Illinois House passed a bill by a 63-42 vote to allow terminally ill patients to receive medical aid in dying and the bill now moves to the Senate. The law sets a five-day waiting period—requiring two witnesses to confirm that adults diagnosed with six months or less to live have orally requested the procedure—so that the process remains strictly regulated.  WCIA
  • Fifty-six people from 25 countries became US citizens at the Old State Capitol on Wednesday in a ceremony led by District Judge Colleen Lawless. Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher welcomed the new citizens—who left with American flags and memories of the historic room where Abraham Lincoln gave his famous speech.  WCIA
  • The Springfield Police Department honored Officers Jolene Balog, Logan Coventry, and Jack Clement with the Life Saving Award after they rescued a 22-year-old man in crisis on April 12 at 239 N. 6th Street. The officers worked together—talking to him and securing his arms to stop him from falling—before taking him to a hospital.  The Sangamon Reporter
  • On May 28th, the Illinois Senate passed a bill requiring public libraries to stock naloxone and train staff to use it—Gov. Pritzker will review the measure before it becomes law. Proposed by a high school student from Elgin, the bill expands a program used in Chicago to quickly help opioid overdose victims.  WMAY

  • Four UIS baseball players—relief pitcher Seth Masters, catcher Ivan Dahlberg, first baseman Mark Kattula, and pitcher Mark DeCicco—were named to the 2025 ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Teams on Tuesday morning.
