EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ School District 186 held a ribbon cutting for the new Owen Marsh Elementary School on Friday morning. Classes will begin in August at the new building next to the current structure, and the old school will be demolished after the term ends. WMAY
- ➤ State Senator Doris Turner announced the Summer Book Club for district kids, which will require participants to read eight books during summer break and return a form to her Springfield, Decatur or Capitol office by Aug. 14 to earn a gift card + certificate. WMAY
- ➤ The first session of the Springfield Minority Business Institute finished with participants learning about zoning laws, grant opportunities, and business planning over nine weeks + community members contributed handmade stoles and food. Ethan Posey led the initiative and is reviewing the curriculum for future sessions. WYMG
- ➤ Lawmakers and the state board of education addressed funding delays after $18 million for after-school programs was released in April, leaving providers only until the end of August to spend the money (delays have complicated planning for childcare and academic support). WYMG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ IDOT announced that while some construction lanes reopen for Memorial Day weekend, several work zones across west‑central Illinois remain active. Motorists should expect delays on local highways and plan extra travel time while following safety guidelines. The State Journal-Register
- ➤ City Water, Light and Power has activated EV charging stations at the University of Illinois at Springfield, Freedom Drive in Parkway Pointe, and West Wabash Avenue. Additional sites will open soon as the pilot provides 40 ports across nine locations and is funded largely by an Illinois Finance Authority grant. ABC 20

- ➤ Springfield High won the 2A Mattoon girls soccer Regional title after beating Sacred Heart Griffin 7 & 0 on May 22, and the Senators will face Triad next Wednesday at 6:30 in the Alton Sectional Semifinal. WNNS
- ➤ Kenzie Wieland pitched a no-hitter for the Sacred Heart-Griffin Cyclones in a 2-0 Regional Final win at Pleasant Plains over Beardstown + she struck out 14 hitters and walked two, and the team will face Rochester on Tuesday at 4:30. WNNS
