- ➤ Springfield received a $199,800 state grant today to improve access at Lake Springfield Center Park with plans for a new walking path, motorboat dock, canoe launch (12 boat slips) and upgraded parking. The project is part of a statewide effort to boost boating and recreation. The State Journal-Register
- ➤ A ceremony at Camp Butler National Cemetery will start at 1:30 p.m. Monday with music and speakers + American Legion Post 32 will serve free soup from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., while Nelson Center Pool and a new splash pad at Gietl Park open May 23. The State Journal-Register
- ➤ The Community Foundation of Central Illinois reached a $92M endowment at its annual meeting Wednesday at the Peoria Riverfront Museum and announced five new endowed funds to support local projects + honored Founders Award recipients Owen and Carole Ackerman for their lasting contributions. 25 News

- ➤ Springfield Wyndham's owner reached a settlement with Affiliated FM after filing suit for delayed insurance payments that cost him thousands; the hotel had been closed in March 2025 after local officials investigated suspected vandalism, and settlement details remain unknown. WYMG

- ➤ District 186 has established a student-executive council with one student from Springfield, Southeast, and Lanphier High Schools to replace the single student trustee and boost student voices. - ➤ The Illinois Commerce Commission approved rail safety improvements in Macon County on Thursday & the new automatic warning device and circuitry upgrade at the Wyckles Road crossing in Warrensburg will be funded 95% by the GCPF as work is expected to be completed within 18 months. WAND-TV
- ➤ State senators passed a bill on Wednesday (May 20) banning forever chemicals in beauty products to protect public health. The measure now moves to the House for further review. WAND-TV
- ➤ The Illinois Liquor Control Commission has launched an online directory and interactive map that lists breweries + brew pubs, distilleries and wineries, available at ilcc.illinois.gov. The tool helps residents plan tasting trips and supports the local hospitality industry. WYMG
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Illinois health officials said today that Ebola risk remains low amid outbreaks in remote parts of the Congo and Uganda. They noted that specialized treatment centers are ready if travelers show signs of exposure. 25 News

- ➤ Normal U-High beat Rantoul in their home Regional final on Thursday, May 21 after freshman Adia Wheelwright retired 17 batters in a row following a one out walk in the first inning. Coach Al Toliver praised the team's strong effort after the win. WNNS
- ➤ Several Springfield area boys track teams have qualified for the state meet at O’Brien Field in Charleston beginning Thursday, May 28 — standout performances from Chatham Glenwood, Springfield High and others secured sectional wins in sprints, relays and field events. The State Journal-Register
