ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A vehicle crashed into the Springfield Fire Station at the intersection of Hedley and Koke Mill Rd on Sunday afternoon—damaging the front of the building—and officials did not report any injuries while the cause remains unknown.  ABC 20

CULTURE NEWS

  • Historian Jason Emerson released a book that recompiles Mary Lincoln’s lost letters, revealing her loneliness and mood swings amid family disputes that led to her commitment—experts say the letters show signs of what might be called bipolar disorder. The new work adds fresh context to debates about whether her behavior was misinterpreted to benefit her son.  WMAY
  • A new book by historian Jason Emerson compiles Mary Lincoln’s long-forgotten letters to show her feelings of isolation and fear that those closest to her were after her money. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Springfield will receive $1.387 million in federal funds to clear debris from severe flooding caused by the June 29 derecho and storms, announced by U.S. Rep. Nikki Budzinski on May 15. The derecho caused about $10 million in damage with widespread tree damage and power outages.  The State Journal-Register

  • Today, Springfield area high school softball playoffs begin with Class 1A and 2A games at 4:30 p.m. plus other regional matchups set through May that will decide which teams move on to sectional semifinals.  The State Journal-Register
  • The high school baseball playoffs begin today with first pitch thrown in the Class 1A and 2A brackets while regional match-ups are set for later this week.
