ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Funeral services continue for victims of the April 28 YNOT After School Camp crash when a Jeep driven by Marianne Akers left the roadway and crashed through the building in Chatham; Ainsley Johnson was interred Friday after a service at Springfield First United Methodist Church, Rylee Britton had visitation Monday with a funeral Tuesday at Cherry Hills Church, and Kathryn Corley's visitation began Wednesday before a Mass of Christian Burial Thursday, while a celebration of life for Alma Buhnerkempe is set for Saturday—state police said the driver was not under the influence and evidence pointed to a possible medical emergency.  Capitol City Now
  • Funeral services for the four girls killed in the Monday crash at the YNOT After School Camp are underway this week, with services set for Ainsley Johnson on May 2 at Springfield First United Methodist Church, for Rylee Britton today at Cherry Hills Church, for Kathryn Corley on May 7 at Church of the Little Flower, and a celebration of life for Alma Buhnerkempe on May 10 at the TRN Club; the crash (which injured six children) involved driver Marianne Akers (44) of Chatham who was not under the influence and reportedly suffered a medical emergency.  WAND-TV

  • Mayor Misty Buscher recommended promoting Assistant Fire Chief Nicholas Zummo to Fire Chief and Assistant Police Chief Joseph Behl to Police Chief and also promoting Captain Julie Plunk and Commander Ryan Leach as assistants pending Springfield City Council approval & these changes follow the retirements of Fire Chief Edward Canny and Police Chief Ken Scarlette, signaling a shift in leadership & setting a new course for public safety in the city.  The Sangamon Reporter

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health care unions rallied at the Capitol to push for the Hospital Worker Staff and Safety bill—which would require hospitals to adopt nurse-to-patient ratios and report staffing data—to help protect patient safety and reduce staff burnout. Lawmakers will consider the proposal while critics warn it may burden hospitals that already struggle with labor shortages.  25 News

  • Sean Lowder pitched a complete game, striking out the side in the seventh to lead Pleasant Plains to a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart Griffin on Monday — with Andrew Potthoff and Trager Shultz providing key hits. The 2A seedings will be released Tuesday — and Pleasant Plains improved to a 22-5 record while SHG dropped to 17-6.  WNNS
  • UIS Baseball finished its regular season with a 13 to 2 win over McKendree after heavy rain delayed the game in Lebanon and forced play to resume at 7:00 p.m. on a turf field in Greenville—UIS now prepares to compete in the GLVC Championship Tournament as the No. 2 seed while McKendree’s postseason hopes ended.  University of Illinois Springfield
  • Maddie Moore hit a two RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth to give the Cardinals a 3 to 1 win over Lincoln after the teams were tied 1 to 1. She also doubled in the fifth inning to score as Anna Nestler pitched seven innings while Madisen Wurth drove in Lincoln’s only run.  WNNS
  • The UIS women’s golf team is competing in the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf East Regional at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich. from Monday through Wednesday. The veteran lineup—led by All-GLVC honoree Elaine Grant—aims to finish among the top five teams and top two individuals to move on to nationals May 13 to 17 in Boulder City, Nev.  University of Illinois Springfield
