EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Southern Illinois University School of Medicine was awarded R1 status by the Carnegie Foundation last winter for its high research spending and more than 100 active doctoral programs—earning it a place among only six top research institutions in Illinois. The school celebrated this milestone on April 30. WMAY
- ➤ Lincoln Land Community College is offering a free Introduction to Health Care Professions class for 18-24-year-olds this summer and fall to help them learn about careers like nursing, radiography and surgical technology. The summer session runs from June 9 to July 29 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the fall session runs from Aug. 23 to Dec. 17 on Fridays from noon to 4 p.m. — participants get free tuition, books, uniforms and transportation help. - ➤ Springfield’s City Water Light and Power celebrates Drinking Water Week, May 4—10, with social media prize drawings and updates on water system improvements to protect Lake Springfield. The utility said its 2024 Water Quality Report confirmed that treated water met all federal and state standards as contaminant levels stayed well below allowed limits. WMAY
