CRIME NEWS

  • Human skeletal remains were found in a wooded area on the 1700 block of North Milton Avenue in Grandview on April 18 and were recovered by the Sangamon County Coroner and Springfield Police, who examined the remains on April 19 and April 22 while tests are pending.  The State Journal-Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill that would require baby food manufacturers to test and label toxic metals passed the Illinois House public health committee unanimously — it mandates monthly tests for lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium — and now moves to the House floor for further debate.  WAND-TV
  • The Secretary of State said a new Flagship DMV center will open at 2701 S. Dirksen Parkway on Monday, May 5 at 2 p.m. The 42,000 square-foot center will offer faster service as staff move from three smaller facilities, with two closing today.  ABC 20
  • Sangamon County will open its first ever morgue in Springfield in about one month to provide forensic services to Sangamon and 14 other counties. The new facility will offer autopsies, toxicology, and radiology services, and it is built with ample storage and meeting space—ensuring that evidence integrity is maintained.  WAND-TV
  • Senator Dick Durbin told reporters on April 24 that he will not seek re-election in 2026—he answered questions about his decision during a press conference.  FOX Illinois

SPORTS NEWS

  • Illinois Springfield baseball team is traveling to Bolivar, Mo for a four-game GLVC series against Southwest Baptist; the team will play a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader on Friday and a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday—an adjustment from the original schedule—while fans can stream the games live on the GLVC Sports Network.  University of Illinois Springfield
