COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Clean Slate Advocates, a local nonprofit, offers free laundry services to those in need at All-In-One Laundry Services on South Grand Avenue—its facility processes over 5,000 loads in a day and served over 6,400 people in March while relying on community donations and a city grant. Executive Director Robert Frazier expects summer demand to increase.  ABC 20

CRIME NEWS

  • Illinois State Police in Springfield used a $10 million grant from the Secretary of State’s office to fight vehicle theft and carjackings in the first quarter of 2025—recovering 243 stolen cars, making 34 arrests, and seizing 7 firearms.  WCIA
  • Attorney General Kwame Raoul charged Jacalyn Walker—an office manager from Carlinville aged 35—with theft of government property, wire fraud and official misconduct after she allegedly transferred $7,000 from a drug asset account. Her next court appearance is set for May 13 as the investigation by the Illinois State Police continues.  ABC 20

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Illinois Secretary of State and state librarian Alexi Giannoulias has issued $1.3M in funding for school libraries statewide, with each district receiving at least $850—about 90 cents per student. The funds will support new books, e-books, audiobooks and technology for K-12 students.  25 News
  • District 186’s school board voted to raise the weekly summer SCOPE fee from $125 to $155 per child—adding costs for families who use full-day care—after superintendent Jennifer Gill recommended the increase during Monday’s meeting.  WYMG
  • State Senator Doris Turner secured nearly $1 million from the Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program to create a construction trades education hub at Lanphier in Springfield — funding that will help students gain hands-on skills for stable careers.  The Sangamon Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Springfield reopened the 400 block of East Adams Street for vehicles on April 22 after closing it due to a structure fire, and the north-side sidewalk remains closed until repairs are done. The move sets the stage for the Old Capitol Farmers Market to return—boosting downtown business.  ABC 20

  • Nyla Cooper was named GLVC Player of the Week after a strong Senior Day where she went 5-for-6, hit a home run, and drove in four runs.
