COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army of Springfield will launch a semi-annual food drive starting Tuesday and running through June 15th to collect donations needed to feed about 100 families weekly. Local director Jeff Eddy said high demand forces many to go without food on weekends — urging the community to donate nonperishable items such as canned goods, pasta, rice, and potatoes.  WYMG
  • The Salvation Army of Springfield will hold its semi-annual food drive starting Tuesday until June 15 to gather non-perishable dry goods, canned goods, pasta, rice, and potatoes and secure financial donations needed to support its pantry that feeds about 100 families each week. Local director Jeff Eddy said high demand on Mondays leaves many families without food for the weekend (donations can be dropped off at 1600 E. Clear Lake or at other designated sites).  WYMG
  • The Springfield Civic Garden Club will meet on May 5 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield. The club will start the meeting at 9:30 a.m.—guests may arrive at 9:00 a.m. for refreshments and socializing while Dr. Phil Nixon presents on pollinators and garden planning.  WMAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Illinois Health & Family Services marked 60 years of Medicaid—a program that covers about one in four residents and supports hospitals, schools and nursing homes in our state. Proposed congressional budget cuts could threaten its funding, and Governor JB Pritzker said he will fight to protect these essential services.  WMAY

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Illinois Springfield women’s golf team began the UMSL Spring Invitational with two rounds on Sunday at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis and will play the final 18 holes today at 9:30 a.m. as they face national and GLVC opponents — the five-player lineup includes Elaine Grant, Ira Joshi, Isabelle Segal, Lia Rody, and Sara Prieto.  University of Illinois Springfield
  • The Prairie Stars split a doubleheader with Indianapolis on Saturday, losing game one 1-0 and winning game two 6-4 to improve to 25-16 overall (13-9 in GLVC play). They have the rest of the weekend off and will host Senior Day at home on April 19.  University of Illinois Springfield
  • The Springfield High softball team has joined a new District 186 co-op with Lanphier and Southeast to boost its roster and provide more chances for players at the varsity and JV levels. The school board approved the two-year agreement in January + the move will help the team build on its past successes.  The State Journal-Register
  • The State Journal-Register announced its 12 All-Area boys swimmers and divers after sectional and state meets + athletes from Springfield, Jacksonville and Chatham Glenwood posted top times and scores. Niantic Sangamon Valley’s Andrew Bellemare was named Swimming and Diving All-Area Athlete of the Year after advancing to his first Illinois state finals.  The State Journal-Register
  • The UIS baseball team won two games on Saturday against Missouri Southern, improving its record to 24-10 and extending its win streak to 15. Ethan Bowers hit a walk-off grand slam in game one and Mark Decicco pitched a complete game in game two — UIS will seek a sweep in Sunday's series finale at noon.  University of Illinois Springfield
