GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is honoring former Governor Jim Edgar by naming a new reading room at the Illinois State Library to recognize his work with libraries and literacy programs. He drafted House Joint Resolution 0025 that passed the House on Tuesday—now the Senate will vote on the resolution.  ABC 20
  • A bill made in response to Sonya Massey's death passed unanimously out of the Illinois Senate today. The legislation requires law enforcement to review complete records and evaluations before hiring new officers and will next move to the House.  WAND-TV
  • U.S. elders lost $3.4 billion to financial fraud in 2023, and a state Senator from Rockford introduced a bill that would allow financial and investment advisors to slow down transactions when fraud is suspected. The proposal is on the Senate floor and lawmakers may discuss it in the coming weeks—complaints about elder fraud rose from 20,000 in 2018 to nearly 120,000 in 2023 according to the FBI.  WAND-TV
  • Springfield Police Chief Ken Scarlette announced his plan to retire in June after 27 years of service as he worked to strengthen trust and modernize policing. He said he will work for a smooth leadership transition—Mayor Misty Buscher praised his dedication to public safety.  The Sangamon Reporter
  • State representatives voted Tuesday to pass a bill that bans copays for sexual assault examinations under the Illinois Sexual Assault Survivor Treatment Act—this unanimous measure now moves to the Senate for further review.  WAND-TV
  • On Tuesday, the Illinois House passed several bills including HB 2602 to remove the time limit for filing charges in trafficking and involuntary servitude cases, HB 2805 to bar insurance companies from charging for sexual assault tests, and HB 3409 to ban dangerous chemicals in cosmetics (including formaldehyde and mercury). It also approved HB 3026 to let schools opt in to new dual language education guidelines (77-25 vote) and the bills now await further action.  25 News
  • Illinois lawmakers plan to require data center operators to report water and energy use beginning next spring under Senate Bill 2181—aiming to ease the strain on power grids—and to determine if rising power use is driving up rates for consumers. The measure comes as the state's growing data center industry raises concerns over energy supply and environmental impact.  25 News
