COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Springfield Police Department is working to stop illegal gatherings and pop-up parties by using video surveillance + License Plate Reader cameras and will fine $250 for hosting unlicensed events and up to $50,000 if a response is required.  WYMG
  • The Henson Robinson Zoo reopened on April 5 and welcomes Springfield visitors to see over 96 animal species in natural habitats during daily hours from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until October 31—Zoo Lovers Day on April 8 will feature special events for animal enthusiasts.  The Sangamon Reporter

CRIME NEWS

  • Illinois State Police said drivers failed to follow Scott’s Law many times last year, causing 27 crashes and a fatal crash on Dec. 23 that killed Trooper Clay Carns—while they now use tougher fines from $250 to $10,000 and new GPS alerts via HAAS Alert and Google Maps to keep officers safe such as Trooper Alex Womack, who was badly hurt in a 2019 crash.  WYMG
  • UIS police responded early Sunday morning at around 1:12 a.m. near West Campus housing after reports of shots fired, locating shell casings after a suspect described as a light-skinned Black male with short dreadlocks & wearing denim shorts and a black long-sleeve top fled, and confirmed no damage occurred, no one was injured, and there is no ongoing threat to the campus.  WCIA

  • Legendary American rock band The Black Crowes will perform at the Illinois Lottery Grandstand Stage on August 9 during the Illinois State Fair. Known for their rock & roll hits and blues-infused sound, they will energize fairgoers with a memorable live show.  WMAY

  • Downstate public transit agencies say they face a growing funding gap that may force service cuts if lawmakers do not change current funding formulas—transit leaders ask to raise local sales tax support from 7.5% to 9.4% in 2026 to help cover rising costs.  Capitol News Illinois
