GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State Sen. Chris Balkema has introduced a bill to raise the income limit for the senior homestead exemption to $75,000 for taxable year 2025 — he said high property taxes hurt those on fixed incomes. The Senate Revenue Committee will consider the bill by April 11 — a similar measure also proposes eliminating property taxes for homeowners after 30 years. WMAY
- ➤ State Senator Doris Turner advanced two measures in committee on April 3 in response to Sonya Massey’s murder; Senate Bill 1953 will require law enforcement to check a candidate’s work history and form merit boards in counties with 75,000 people while Senate Bill 1954 will let county boards propose a recall vote for officials in the upcoming 2026 General Election—Turner said the measures honor Massey’s life. - ➤ The City of Springfield’s Department of Public Works reminded residents that the branch pickup program will begin tomorrow with the Northwest Quadrant and continue on April 14 for the Southwest, April 21 for the Southeast and April 28 for the Northeast. Residents must have branches curbside by 7:00 a.m. on their designated week — they can also drop off branches at Evans Recycling with valid proof of residency. WNNS
- ➤ State Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid introduced a bill that would ban public utilities from making campaign contributions to candidates & political action committees if it becomes law. The bill is now in the House Rules Committee and is backed by the Citizens Utility Board amid recent corruption cases involving utilities. WMAY

- ➤ The UIS men's track and field team performed strongly at the Jim Vargo Invitational on Friday evening, earning 11 top-10 finishes before the meet was cut short because of bad weather. Ryan Jones placed second in the 10,000 meter run while Noah Tegeler finished third in the 5,000 meter race — the team will next compete at the Bryan Clay Invitational from April 16 to April 19 in Azusa, California. - ➤ UIS softball is at home this week, hosting a doubleheader against Maryville today at 12:00 p.m. and a rescheduled doubleheader against McKendree on Monday at 2:00 p.m., with Coach Shannon Guthrie earning her 300th win & players Rosie Bartletti and Taylor Zawacki receiving weekly honors after a hard-fought weekend.
