COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ghotti is a little over a year old and has waited since November for a loving family at Sangamon County Animal Control and Adoption Center in Springfield—he gets stressed in his kennel but becomes very friendly when he plays with other dogs and meets people at offsite events.  WYMG

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 4 investigated a serious single-vehicle accident on Monday morning at the intersection of North Second Street and Calhoun Ave where a Jeep with no registration sped away after the Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop it—leaving one subject trapped inside and another underneath the burning vehicle, both of whom were sent to hospitals with charges pending.  WMAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • New Salem where young Abraham Lincoln lived in the 1830s is in need of care—state officials promised $8 million for repairs but work will begin only after a full review of the damage.  WAND-TV
  • New Salem, the tiny historic village where Abraham Lincoln spent part of his youth, now shows serious repair needs due to long neglect—its mills and barns have suffered major damage. State officials will use $8 million for repairs—work has yet to be scheduled or fully assessed.  25 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Clint Warnisher has spent over 20 years in public service as he rose from a firefighter at Lincoln to become Battalion Chief and lead arson investigator with Springfield Fire Department—he now serves as a K9 handler with the department and police using their new Liquid Detection K9, Ozzy.  ABC 20
  • Gov. JB Pritzker has proposed cutting funds for the cover crop program by 31% (from $960,000 to $660,000) despite high demand from farmers and environmental groups who warn the cuts will slow efforts to protect soil. Lawmakers are working on new funding proposals as they plan to pass a budget by the end of May.  Capitol City Now
  • Last week the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department completed ICAT de-escalation training to help deputies better respond to crisis calls. In the wake of Sonya Massey’s fatal shooting in July following her call for help, Sheriff Paula Crouch has now made the training mandatory as the community nears the one-year anniversary of the incident.  WMAY

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • BONDED BROTHERS Charlie and Oliver—two owner-surrendered 2-year-old cats—need to be adopted together through Sangamon County Animal Control and Adoption Center after being given up on March 27. They are neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and tested negative for FIV and FeLV, and those interested should contact the center.  WYMG

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Sunday the Illinois Springfield softball team split its doubleheader against Lincoln—winning 10-0 when head coach Shannon Guthrie earned her 300th win and pitcher Rosie Bartletti threw a perfect game—and losing 1-0 in extra innings despite Taylor Zawacki's strong effort; the team now stands at 22-13 overall and 10-6 in GLVC play and will host McKendree on Saturday and Maryville on Sunday on their home field.  University of Illinois Springfield
