- ➤ Springfield instructor Tayana Henderson pleaded guilty to violating the Firearm Concealed Carry Act and forgery after faking training certificates by saying that applicants completed 16 hours of training, and she was sentenced to two years of second chance probation and 30 hours of community service. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Pew Research data showed that Illinois' rainy day fund held $2.2 billion, which covers only about two weeks of reserves, and the state ranks last among all 50 states for emergency funding capacity. Officials recommend reserving $9.2 billion to cover 60 days of expenses, and state Rep. Dan Ugaste warned that proposed 2026 spending increases could worsen this weak fiscal position — lawmakers may need to revisit tax policies to boost growth. WMAY
- ➤ A 10-year-old girl in Taylorville was repeatedly sexually assaulted on her school bus by a 14-year-old boy, and her parents fought to have him removed from her school. In response, state Sen. Steven McClure introduced Senate Bill 98 in January to require a one-year expulsion for any student who commits sexual assault—and he asked for more time on the bill after it missed its March 21 committee step—while lawmakers work with educators to add clear rules. - ➤ The UIS baseball team beat the Lincoln Blue Tigers last Friday by winning a 24-8 run-rule game and a 13-6 scheduled contest, which boosted their overall record to 14-10 and their GLVC mark to 8-5. - ➤ The Illinois Springfield softball team won two games Friday against Missouri St. Louis by a score of 3 to 2 in the first game and 6 to 4 in extra innings, which improved their record to 21 to 12 overall and 9 to 5 in GLVC play.
