CRIME NEWS

  • The Wyndham Springfield City Centre is temporarily closed after lawmakers left early when water poured through an elevator, and Springfield Fire Chief Ed Canny said the hotel lacks working sprinklers, alarms, and elevators—Springfield police are investigating the damage as intentional vandalism while city agencies work with hotel staff to restore safe guest accommodations.  WAND-TV
  • On March 27, the Springfield Fire Department responded to an alarm at the Wyndham Hotel and found flooding and damage to elevators and fire systems that led to the building being marked unsafe for overnight occupancy. Springfield Police are investigating the intentional vandalism & city agencies are coordinating with hotel staff to plan repairs & avoid prolonged closure.  ABC 20

  • District 186 announced finalists for the 2025 Horace Mann awards—Educator of the Year, Administrator of the Year, and Rising Star—including Emily Anderson from Springfield Learning Academy, Elizabeth House from Butler Elementary, Lisa Schweska from Black Hawk Elementary, Spring Shaon from Douglas PREP, and Veronica Young from the Early Learning Center for Educator of the Year; Erica Filipiak from Wilcox Elementary, Erika Metz from Southeast High School, and Kenyatta Revelle from Iles School for Administrator of the Year; and Sierra Buske from Laketown Elementary, Kristin Cullen from Lanphier High School, and Adam Lanter from Franklin Middle School for Rising Star. Winners for the Educator and Administrator awards—set to be named in April—will be announced later.  ABC 20

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Illinois voters in Springfield will cast ballots on April 1 without needing to show proof of citizenship—state officials explained the state follows federal law requiring only a sworn statement of citizenship and no photo ID at the polls.  WYMG
  • On March 25, City Water Light & Power presented an updated agenda to the city committee that includes plans to award a contract by June 3 to replace 70,000 meters and upgrade grid operations while also advancing a 25 MW solar project and a carbon capture pilot at Dallman Unit 4—these projects are intended to improve outage management and billing accuracy. Local environmentalists criticized the utility’s statements for downplaying clean energy benefits and local control as preparations for an Integrated Resource Plan have halted pending new legislation.  WMAY

  • The UIS baseball team returns home for a GLVC series against Lincoln, a newcomer still seeking its first conference win after a strong weekend that saw three wins in four games against Missouri-St. Louis and Maryville. They played a doubleheader on Friday (1:00 p.m.) and will open another at noon today.  University of Illinois Springfield
  • Ella Brinkley, a UIS softball senior, earned a spot on the 2025 NFCA Division II Player of the Year watchlist (one of 116 athletes) after striking out just 11 times this season. She ranks fifth in the GLVC with a .440 batting average and remains in consideration until the winners are announced on May 30.  University of Illinois Springfield
