ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Desmond Walls, a 19-year-old man, died Tuesday after crashing near the North 2nd Street and Calhoun Street intersection on Monday following a police chase when his Jeep sped up during an attempted traffic stop—another 19-year-old passenger sustained life-threatening injuries.  WAND-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling, LLC issued a recall for 12 ounce cans and 12 can packs of Coca-Cola Original Taste sold in Illinois and Wisconsin because a possible piece of plastic may be in the products — customers should check UPC codes 049000006346 for single cans and 049000028904 for packs and stop using any affected items.  WYMG

CRIME NEWS

  • A Springfield woman, aged 65, died from her injuries at HSHS St. John's Hospital on March 17 after officers responded to a domestic violence call on Sand Hill Roads and a man, aged 61, jumped off the bridge over the Sangamon River—though he could not be saved.  WNNS

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Illinois Springfield Theatre Program will present six performances of Christopher Durang's Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike during two weekends, from April 4 to April 6 and from April 10 to April 12 in the Studio Theatre at the Public Affairs Center. All shows will start at 7:30 p.m. (except the April 6 show at 2 p.m.) and a post-show discussion is scheduled on April 10.  University of Illinois Springfield

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Illinois House Assistant Majority Leader Jehan Gordon-Booth plans to file a clean slate bill next month to automatically seal nonviolent felony records. The proposal is expected to move out of committee and reach a House floor vote by the end of April — a change that could help 2 million Illinoisans rebuild their lives.  WAND-TV

  • After competing yesterday at the WashU Distance Carnival in St. Louis in the 10k with runners Maddie Miller, Jordan Serrahn, Kaleigh Inniss, and Lauren McBride, the UIS women’s track team races today as Allison Thompson runs the 10k and eight Prairie Stars run the 5k. The team will travel to Decatur on Saturday for Millikin's Big Blue Alumni Invite featuring events in the 400m, 800m and 1500m—debutant Josslyn Gaona and record-holder Niyah Udoiwod are set to compete.  University of Illinois Springfield
