Good morning, Springfield.

Illinois State Police arrested 65-year-old Robert W.
Butcher from Pleasant Plains on March 24 after he left the scene of a fatal hit-and-run near New Berlin in Sangamon County that killed 35-year-old Maysa Davis on March 22—troopers shut down eastbound lanes for six hours.
🏛️ Government
A Rockford pro-life pregnancy center and the Diocese of Springfield filed a federal lawsuit on March 20th challenging an Illinois law that requires religious organizations to hire employees who do not share their pro-life beliefs— the groups contend that the law violates their constitutional right to set hiring standards based on faith.

At Tuesday’s city council meeting in Springfield, the sound system did not capture remarks from Caitlyn Weiss, who said the city has not answered her questions about her sister’s serious injuries in a crash involving an allegedly drunk, retired officer.
Officials did not respond to calls or texts, and the meeting video showed a blank screen—leaving local residents worried—and no further comment was made.
At Tuesday's Springfield city council meeting, Caitlyn Weiss complained again that city officials have not responded to her inquiries about a crash in which her sister was injured when a motorcycle collided with an SUV driven by Michael Egan, a retired police sergeant allegedly under the influence. Reporters did not capture her remarks because the meeting's sound system failed.
Sangamon County Clerk Don Gray said early voting continues with steady turnout as residents cast ballots for Capital Township Trustee and school board races in Springfield and Chatham; in-person voting will run Monday through Friday until March 31 and weekend voting will be held March 29-30 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Nearly 23,000 vote-by-mail ballots have been sent and voters are urged to return them promptly.
