CRIME NEWS

  • Officers Zane Steele, DJ Mumaw, and Keagan Graves were honored Wednesday after they saved a critically injured employee from a stabbing that took place early on March 11 when they quickly provided life-saving care at a local establishment — their swift actions kept the victim stable until firefighters arrived.  ABC 20

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Full-time non-tenure track faculty at UIS reached a tentative contract agreement late Wednesday after a long 10-hour session on Tuesday and an all-day negotiation that helped avoid a planned strike—federal mediation ended a year of challenging talks. Union members will vote on the three-year deal with improvements in workload and salary by the end of the month.  WYMG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Moving Pillsbury Forward announced that contracts have been signed for the full demolition of all remaining structures at the former Pillsbury Mills site, with Select Demo Services set to begin on-site next week to remove asbestos and lead paint chips—supported by USEPA Cleanup Grants. A designated viewing area with seating and water will be available along 15th Street—and a public meeting to answer community questions will be announced soon.  The Sangamon Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Springfield Police Department today has introduced Duke, a two-year-old Belgian Malinois who will undergo 15 weeks of training in narcotics detection and suspect apprehension to serve alongside Officer Joe Reidy. Duke passed a thorough health screening (including x-rays for hip dysplasia) before joining the team and will later participate in community events.  WYMG
  • Governor Pritzker said the USDA cut over $1 billion in funds from local schools and food banks, warning that this could worsen food insecurity and harm long-term support programs. Some lawmakers and farm officials criticized the move + called for future bills to include aid like SNAP and conservation programs to protect Illinois families.  WMAY
