- ➤ AAA reported that Springfield gas prices were $3.37 per gallon on Monday morning as global tensions in Iran pushed costs above $3 nationwide+ Cook County topped prices at $3.74 while Brown County recorded the lowest at $3.17. The State Journal-Register
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Illinois Student Assistance Commission and Kaplan announced the free Prepare for Illinois' Future test prep program will run through the end of the school year, with over 12,000 students registered statewide, and Governor Pritzker plans to propose funding it in FY27 (as part of his Affordability Agenda). - ➤ Heartland Credit Union announced that Aaron Rios, who has over 20 years of financial leadership experience and a recent role as chief operating officer at Merrick Bank — replacing longtime CEO Tom Lex after a 45-year tenure — will serve as the new CEO. WMAY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) has introduced a bipartisan bill to require insurers to cover seizure detectors for people with epilepsy. Lawmakers including Sen. Terri Bryant say the measure aims to cut the stigma and improve access to care. WYMG
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Illinois lawmakers are reviewing a proposed food safety law that would require baby food makers to test for heavy metals and ban harmful dyes in processed foods (aiming to protect children’s health). The Senate passed the Food Safety Act and it will move to the House for review. WYMG
- ➤ March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and Springfield residents can pick up free FIT kits at drive-thru events—providing noninvasive screening options. Health experts say early detection through colonoscopies or home tests can lower risks and boost survival. WYMG
