CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Springfield families gathered last Sunday for the 5th annual Black Children’s Book Week with local leaders reading books and giving away free books to boost positive representation in literature (organizers said the event inspires young readers). WYMG
- ➤ This weekend, Springfield will host arts events starting Friday with a glass blowing demo at the Springfield Art Association at 6 p.m., followed Saturday by a ballet at Legacy Theatre, a hot chocolate hike, and a skating event at local venues. The State Journal-Register
- ➤ March in Springfield offers a busy lineup of events, beginning with an opening weekend at The Railyard on March 6–7 and continuing with a St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 14, a pancake breakfast benefit on March 21, and star parties at UIS on March 27. WYMG
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The statewide paint recycling program collected 60,000 gallons over the past two months, serving Springfield and surrounding areas. Launched in 2024 under the Paint Stewardship Act, the program features 345 centers and offers easy access for residents within a 15-mile radius + supports local retailers. WAND-TV

- ➤ The Springfield Fire Department contained a fire today at City Water, Light and Power’s Dallman Power station on Stevenson Drive (the incident began in a decommissioned scrubber for retired units 31 and 32) with no injuries or impact on active equipment. ABC 20
- ➤ Heartland Credit Union in Springfield will host a passport registration day on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Attendees should bring the required documents, such as a photo ID and certified birth certificate, to complete their passport applications. WMAY

- ➤ Redfin Real Estate data for January shows Springfield housing prices are more affordable than nationwide levels (bottom-tier homes cost $33,212 and luxury properties cost $642,909). Redfin economists predict prices will improve in 2026 and beyond. WYMG

- ➤ The UIS men’s tennis team defeated Evangel 6-1 in a road match on Monday in Springfield — winning all doubles matches and five of six singles to raise its record to 4-4. They will host Roosevelt on Saturday. University of Illinois Springfield
- ➤ Following a 44 to 39 overtime victory Tuesday, the Lincoln Railers will compete against the MacArthur Generals for the sectional title on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Normal West (a critical semifinal in the 3A division). WMAY
- ➤ On Monday morning, the UIS women’s tennis team swept Evangel 7-0 with straight-set wins in singles and doubles—bolstering their record ahead of a home match against Roosevelt on Saturday. University of Illinois Springfield
- ➤ The Pleasant Plains Cardinals beat Alton Marquette 52-21 in the 2A North Mac sectional semifinal after a 31-1 run following the first basket. They will face Father McGivney in the title game tomorrow at 6 p.m. WNNS
