- ➤ Illinois Manufacturers’ Association is launching the 2026 Makers Madness contest that lets residents vote for the coolest product made in the state; nominations run through March 8, voting for the Top 16 begins March 10, and the winner will be named April 15 at the Governor’s Mansion in Springfield. - ➤ Local comedian Cassandra Simpson is converting a camper into Rolling Laughs, a mobile stage for open mic nights, comedy shows, and karaoke that will park at local business lots. The stage will roll out in late spring. Capitol City Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Springfield Public School District is considering starting the school year earlier than mid-August to avoid safety issues and funding losses from fair parking. A committee is reviewing a balanced semester plan (which may affect teacher–parent conferences) and could vote on the change at the next meeting. WYMG
- ➤ The University of Illinois Springfield will host popular Star Parties at 8-10 p.m. on Feb. 27 and March 27 at the UIS Campus Observatory on the roof of Brookens Library—guests can view the moon, Jupiter, and star clusters if weather permits. University of Illinois Springfield
- ➤ UIS Associate Professor John Martin will host free star parties at the UIS Campus Observatory on Feb. 27 and March 27, featuring telescopes to view the moon, Jupiter, the Orion Nebula and star clusters. - ➤ District 186's summer SCOPE program nearly closed because of lost funding but a 10-dollar weekly fee increase and a 10,000-dollar grant from the school board kept it running. The board approved the change at a recent meeting, ensuring the program continues to serve local youth. Capitol City Now
