COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Scooby is a 1 1/2-year-old German Shepherd mix at Sangamon County Animal Control and Adoption Center since early November. He gets along well with other dogs and visitors can view his friendly nature during shelter hours: Mon-Fri 10:30-4:15 + Sat 9:00-1:00.  Capitol City Now
  • The Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln today is offering grants to small business owners serving seniors and more than 45 postsecondary scholarships for local students. Applications are available online or by calling (217-789-4431).  WYMG
  • Stuffing, a 10-year-old calico who arrived on Oct. 20, is available for adoption at a foster home in Springfield. The cat is spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated, and comes with a $25 adoption fee.  WYMG
  • The Sangamon County Fair will host a grandstand show co-headlined by multi-platinum country star Josh Turner and American Idol winner Scotty McCreery on Friday, June 12. Tickets go on sale this Friday, Jan. 16 at 8 a.m. at sangcofair.com.  WMAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Illinois State University held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for an $87 million upgrade to its fine arts facilities in Normal with Gov. JB Pritzker and local officials in attendance. The project includes new spaces for visual and performing arts and will be completed in phases by 2028.  25 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Illinois' Get Covered has extended health insurance enrollment until Jan. 31 to let residents shop for affordable coverage that begins on Feb. 1. Assistance is available via navigator & broker support through the state's directory and call center.  WYMG
  • Memorial Health Hospitals in Springfield have seen a rise in flu cases since Thanksgiving, with tests showing about one in four positive by Dr. Ted Clark. Hospitals have set visitor rules (adults only, two per patient) to help slow the spread, and he expects the surge to peak soon.  Capitol City Now

  • UIS Athletics invites the Prairie Stars community to a reception to welcome coach Laura Ulrich, who completed her first season in Fall 2025.
